Columbia’s Pre-College Program has served high-achieving high school students from across the country and around the world since 1986. During the summer, we offer over 280, non-credit courses, both on-campus and online, in 3-week, 2-week, and 1-week durations. These courses cover a wide range of subjects, including architecture and the arts, science and medicine, business, psychology, neuroscience, computer programming and more. In addition to taking classes, students have the opportunity to engage in a variety of extracurricular activities throughout the program, including workshops on leadership, college-readiness, career design and wellness.
Academics
All instructors are required to submit a detailed syllabus prior to the start of the program. Instructors are able to design the course as they wish based on their own expertise, ensuring the curriculum continues to align with the course description. To supplement lectures and classroom activities, instructors are permitted to schedule guest speakers, and for those teaching on-campus, arrange field trips to relevant locations nearby. At the end of the course, instructors are required to write a letter of evaluation for each student in their course, outlining their participation and involvement.
Catered Pedagogical Support
With a commitment to providing unparalleled pedagogical and instructional support to our instructors, we offer an abundance of resources through our Team for Instructional & Pedagogical Support (TIPS). From workshops and training sessions, to online resources and one-on-one consultations, the TIPS team is committed to empowering instructors with the knowledge and skills they need to excel in the classroom. The TIPS team has curated a collection of teaching strategies, best practices, and practical tools designed to support instructors in their teaching endeavors. Support begins with curriculum and syllabus development all the way through to course execution and reflection.
The Hiring Process
