The Recruitment Process at Wētā Workshop

How do I apply for a role at Wētā Workshop?

You'll find all our open vacancies here. Click on the job and apply directly from there. If you don't see what you're looking for, you might like to join one of our Talent Pools.

What can I expect when I apply for a role at Wētā Workshop?

It depends on the role, but our recruitment process could involve the following if you are successful through each stage:

  • A CV review - we'll check your experience matches what we need for the role
  • A phone screen - that's us calling you to find out more about you, and an opportunity for you to find out more about the role
  • Interviews - online, face-to-face, technical and/or informal
  • Online psychometric assessments - mainly for senior roles
  • Background checks - these will depend on the role
  • A job offer!

How long does the recruitment process take?

Short answer - it varies.

Some of our roles are filled very quickly, others take longer (especially when there are constraints that are out of our hands e.g. Immigration requirements). We'll keep you informed along the way with expected timeframes, and you're welcome to reach out at any time for an update.

Do I need to submit a portfolio with my application?

For certain creative roles you will be asked to provide one - that's the best way to showcase your work.

Ideally give us a link, so that if you need to make changes to it, or update it with your latest work, you can do so at any time.

General FAQs

Is Wētā Workshop a flexible workplace?

We value flexibility and work-life balance. Different areas of the business have different needs and limits to what they can offer in terms of hours and location. Flexibility means different things to different people - so feel free to reach out to us and ask if what you need will work for the role you're interested in.

Is Wētā Workshop an accredited employer with Immigration NZ?

Yes, but we are required to first look within New Zealand to fill vacant roles, so not all our vacancies will be suitable for people who don't have the right to work in New Zealand.

We're not permitted to offer any immigration advice so check out Immigration NZ for more information.

What's the difference between Wētā Workshop & Wētā FX?

While there is some crossover in the work they do, Wētā Workshop and Wētā FX are two separate companies with different core capabilities and lines of business.

The best way to think of it is like this: Wētā Workshop is primarily a practical effects and conceptual design facility. For the most part, we make props, costumes, artwork, vehicles, miniatures, models, and more, for a wide range of screen and location-based experience projects. Items you can touch, hold, stitch together, hand-build, illustrate, and craft. The caveat is that we also have a game development studio at Wētā Workshop and a growing tourism business.

Wētā FX creates digital visual effects for movies and television, employing visual effects artists, animators, programmers, technical directors, software engineers, and many more. Wētā FX has its own recruitment website: Wētā FX Careers.

Where are you based?

We have people working out a number of locations in Miramar, Wellington and our Unleashed tourism team are based at the Sky City complex in Auckland CBD.

What about my dog?

Many of the areas within our premises are dog-friendly. If your dog is well behaved and socialised, then please ask and they might be able to join the crew, too!
