Location: Vancouver, BC
Position: Systems Designer
I finished my engineering degree in Mechatronics Systems Engineering at Simon Fraser University in 2014, where I had heavily focused my latter half of my studies on controls. I discovered the job opportunity through my coop adviser and quickly found myself going through a series of interviews. I found that all the interviewers were very friendly and great to speak with so I was quickly drawn in. One of the key highlights I noticed was that Grantek doesn’t just work hard, but they play harder.
Entering my second year as a Grantekian, I have found myself invested in the company and would not be surprised if I retire here. In Grantek we excel in what we do, and make sure we offer the very best to our clients. On top of that, our clientele are all within promising industries that don’t follow economical fluctuations like oil and gas. One example is food and bev. Unless humans find a way to survive without food, I think we’ll always have some form of work to do.
There are so many great things I could say about Grantek and the opportunity they offer but a few key things that come to mind include: travel opportunity, great work environment - I've travelled to many of our offices, interoffice friendships beyond work - what could be better than the Allentown/San Fran/Vancouver Whistler adventure trip, education budgets - you can learn more though you just finished school and may not want to, but hey, it's there. Grantek feels like a family!
Working in the Systems Group has allowed me to design data acquisition systems for Solar Energy sites, PLC programming, HMI and SCADA design, network design, commissioning, client coordination, and controls programming. My work is super interesting.
When any server or computer system is having a problem, what’s the solution? Reset it of course. And to an extent, we can apply this to life. If ever you have a problem and clearly can’t figure it out, just take a step back, calm down, and clear the “cache” for a moment. Within Grantek, we know that you are going to run into problems – it’s the reason we work – we understand that sometimes things can get difficult so we’re here to guide you to become a system expert!
