Discover becoming an Emergency Medical Dispatcher-Call Handler: Be a calm, reassuring voice for callers during emergencies. Our Integrated Operations Centres play a vital role in managing and triaging 111 calls and coordinating resources across Aotearoa - 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  

The EMT Residential Programme offers a unique opportunity to train as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and begin a meaningful career in emergency healthcare - no previous healthcare experience required.

Over six months, recruits complete a structured training journey, including ten weeks of on-site learning at a residential training facility, delivered across the duration of the programme. The programme combines daytime learning with evening study, creating an intensive and supportive environment to build the skills needed for frontline care.

The Tertiary Employment Pathway (TEP) is the national entry point into full-time frontline ambulance roles.  It connects tertiary students and recent graduates with hands-on clinical experience across Aotearoa New Zealand. 

The Tertiary Employment Pathway is for:  

Current tertiary students or recent graduates who have completed one of the following:  

• A Bachelor of Health Science (Paramedicine) degree or diploma for an approved NZ or Australian tertiary provider within the last years  

• Semester 3 of study at AUT or Te Pūkenga Whitireia  

• Semester 4 of study at Griffth University or Charles Sturt University 

• Diploma of Emergency Healthcare from the Australian Paramedical College (APC)  

• A current Hato Hone volunteer or casual team member who meets the study criteria and is ready for full-time employment 

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT):  

Most applicants begin their careers here. This role is suitable for diploma graduates, current degree students seeking greater clinical exposure, or degree graduates looking for practical frontline experience. EMT roles provide valuable hands-on experience across a wide range of clinical situations.  

Graduate Paramedic Programme (GPP):  

For Degree graduates ready to transition into independent Paramedic practice, holding the required qualifications and registration. These roles are advertised internally and open to full-time EMTs.

This pathway for qualified paramedics who want to relocate or return to New Zealand and continue practising at an advanced level. When this pathway is open, we can consider applications from: 

• Registered Paramedics practising independently in Australia or the United Kingdom with a minimum of two years’ frontline experience. 

• New Zealand qualified and registered paramedics currently practising overseas who wish to return home and continue their frontline career.

Critical Care Paramedic (CCP) or Extended Care Paramedic (ECP). To become a CCP or an ECP you’ll need to complete additional qualifications and have significant experience as a Paramedic. Our specialist Paramedic roles are delivered through an internship and advertised internally.

Secondary triage: Paramedics and Nurses within our Integrated Operations Centre work to ensure patients receive the right care, at the right time.
